Have I Done Any Good? - Hymns #223
As I listened to General Conference this past weekend, I had many thoughts. So many were spurred on by such outstanding talks, but, one really caught me and held on (let me be truthful, several got to me, and you will see those here in the coming weeks or less).
Have I Done Any Good?
I often think that thought and wonder what good I have done. It seems as though I go through periods where I feel that I have done some good, and others when I don’t. Just because I don’t feel like I have done much good doesn’t mean that I haven’t though…Sometimes, we do a fair amount of good, but, because it seems so normal, we take it for granted. Sometimes we feel the exact opposite, and wonder how we could possibly do more, yet, we really aren’t doing all that we really could be doing.
Evaluate your time and what you can do. No one said you have to take in more work, or cook meals for all the needy in your ward or even watch all the neighborhood kids. Sometimes it really is as simple as tuning into the spirit and heading his direction. Maybe you simply need to write a note to a friend, neighbor or loved one or maybe you need to take a few minutes just for a child. You don’t always know what it is or why, but listening to the spirit, and acting on the prompting will help you to know whether you have done any good.
A Family Motto
I decided on Sunday that this should be our family motto forever really, but at least until the end of the year. Family home evening will be made up of ways that we can do good and know it. I want my children to understand how good it feels to know when you have done good, and know why. My kids get good grades, are good friends, and all around good, but, the feeling of doing something for someone else and feeling the joy of that is much different. I would love for you to share your ideas whether you are have done this with your family or if you are a novice like me.
FYI: Did you know that the Church website has a function where you can actually listen to the music being played for each hymn? I love it, since we don’t have a piano I can play this for FHE and we can all sing along! Check out the Hymns being played.
