A Review of MormonLore.com

by Molly on September 6, 2008

If you haven’t been invited or signed up as a member of MormonLore.com, you should be shunned! Just kidding! Ok, this is one of the coolest ideas ever! The way they have set up their site is so similar to how I wanted this site, not the looks or the idea, but, the connection you feel as you hear or read some of the hilarious things that are there!  This is one of those places where you can really be silly, spiritual, or pecuiliar!

What is MormonLore?

MormonLore is an Internet record of the Mormon experience as its people see and hear it. Because the site is authored by Mormons, or members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the everyday experiences you’ll read about are told from the perspective of an LDS religious affiliation rather than a doctrinal perspective.

The site is literally a repository for Mormon culture, celebrating Mormons in all their glory— be they inspirational, comical, or peculiar (yes, we are a peculiar people).

MormonLore.com

Why?

Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has urged members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to proactively share their testimonies online:

There are conversations going on about the Church constantly. Those conversations will continue whether or not we choose to participate in them. But we cannot stand on the sidelines while others, including our critics, attempt to define what the Church teaches…May I ask that you join the conversation by participating on the Internet, particularly the New Media, to share the gospel and to explain in simple, clear terms the message of the Restoration?

Perhaps now, more than ever, we have a major responsibility as Latter-Day Saints to define ourselves, instead of letting others define us.

The MormonLore Mission

If it seems like Mormons are always on missions, we’re still going!

The MormonLore mission is two-fold:

  1. Share the Message of the Restored Church of Jesus Christ
  2. Become the repository of the first-hand or primary Mormon experience

We encourage all members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its friends to share their personal “Mormon” experiences in Blog-imonies. The personal stories, experiences, and traditions, whether inspirational, comical, or peculiar” are found on Mormonlore.com.

As a side note here, I had the opportunity to talk to Justin, owner of mormonLore.com today, and after hearing his ideas and thoughts that helped bring this site about, I hope all of us fully embrace this great site, and share with each other great stories. As Justin was telling me about his site, and how he wanted to share the message of the gospel with others, and how he wanted to be able to have all the negative searches on search engine’s harder to find, it made me think about his site, and how it had similarities to the Friend and Ensign.

The Internet as a whole, is a great and marvelous place. Do we need to be careful online? Yes, most definitely! We must also do as our leaders have asked, and share the gospel, and one of the easiest places to do that is in person in every day situations, and online when and where appropriate. I would love to hear your comments, and suggestions! I am sure that Justin would also! Visit mormonLore.com for entertaining and uplifting stories (share a few of your own)!
