In most wards the Compassionate Service Leader is over funerals. In my ward, it’s a separate calling. There are several things that a “Funeral Lady” must do, such as:

Arrange for sister’s to sign up or volunteer to bring food for the luncheon (see our menu and special recipe).

Make sure enough tables and chairs are set up for attendees and tables for the food.

Have enough help for a few servers and kitchen help.

Arrange for flowers to be brought in from the Chapel to the cultural hall (if the funeral was at the ward house.)

Send leftovers home with the family and if there is enough, take it to the sick or elderly in the ward.

Cover tables and put out all plates, cups, silverware, and napkins. Put butter, salt and pepper, and ice water on tables. Take down tables and chairs and make sure everything is put away. Our ward buys the ham, butter, vegetable, dressing, ice, and paper goods. We have funeral potatoes, cake, rolls, and salads donated. Our Relief Society President likes to have things looking nice and she really goes the extra mile. She always brings extra tomatoes for the salad and the night before the luncheon she folds the silverware into the napkins and puts it in a special basket. We have also found that there is a roll of plastic that is used for the tables and it is the same price as the paper. The best funeral potato recipe is one I got from Sister Mahoney. You will find it below and in Recipe Sharing.
